Overview

Everyone experiences stress and times when life gets out of balance. This course explores the nature and causes of stress and will give you tools and approaches to help manage your stress responses from a range of perspectives, including mindfulness, compassion, nervous system regulation and assertiveness.

Programme

This is an online course with live teaching sessions delivered via Microsoft Teams by a qualified tutor.

Week 1 ~  What is stress and how does it show up in our physiology? Lecture, group discussion and small study groups.

Week 2 ~ The Window of Tolerance Model and an introduction to the role of Mindfulness in Stress Management. Lecture, group discussion and small study groups

Week 3 ~ What is compassion and how do we practice it for ourselves as part of  Stress Management? Lecture, group discussion and small study groups

Week 4 ~ The role of assertiveness as a tool for stress management. Lecture, group discussion and small study groups

Week 5 ~ Assignment one ~ Employing stress management tools as we write our course essay. Group discussion and essay writing.

Week 6 ~ Mapping the four stress management tools together. Going forward with our stress management, Assignment two ~ Multiple Choice Quiz. Lecture, group discussion and online quiz

Aims:

  1. Introduce the topic of stress and the role of stress management
  2. Identify four specific tools to be employed to manage stress ~ nervous system regulation; mindfulness, self-compassion, assertiveness.
  3. Apply the theory to your own personal experience of stress.
  4. Adopt a stress management approach to life / work going forwards.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge  and understanding of the reasons and benefits of adopting stress management tools.
  2. Reflect upon and evaluate stress management interventions.
  3. Identify ways in which stress management tools can be applied successfully in personal or professional settings

  1. In Class Test - Multiple choice (30%)
  2. Reflective Essay - 1500 Words (70%)
