Overview

In this course, we will explore scientific findings on what makes us happy and try to apply these in our lives! The purpose of this course is not only to understand the theories underlying Positive Psychology but also to explore its applications and experience the impact of Positive Psychology interventions.  
Throughout the eight weeks of this course, we will explore topics such as engagement, meaning, gratitude and positive relationships. Each week you will take part in short activity aimed at increasing your well-being based on findings from Positive Psychology. This course will be delivered online and will include elements of self-directed learning as well as weekly live sessions focused on discussion and collaboration.

Programme

Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practise the techniques they have learned and develop their skills. Students will be encouraged to share their own work and participate in discussions on Blackboard. Alongside the learning materials on Blackboard the tutor will be on hand via email to answer any queries and provide guidance throughout the course. They will also participate in the online discussions.   

Each week includes:

(1) 1-hour of self-directed study including watching a pre-recorded lecture and taking part in asynchronous activities on Blackboard.

(2) 1-hour live session on Microsoft Teams focused on discussion and collaboration

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific foundations of Positive Psychology.
  2. Reflect on and evaluate Positive Psychology Interventions.
  3. Apply key concepts from Positive Psychology to your personal life.
  4. Propose and discuss new interventions aimed at increasing wellbeing. 

Assessments

  1. 2 x Blackboard quizzes (20%)
  2. Reflective journal - 6 entries/300 words each (80%)

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.

As this is an online course, you would need the following:

• Internet access.
• Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also be of benefit.
• Use of the Chrome web-browser where possible.
