Overview

Speaking in front of others in a professional capacity is a skill that is useful for promotion and employment. It can be uncomfortable. Don’t shy away from this skill, be brave, address the issue.  Preparation is the key! This online self-paced interactive course will focus on developing your confidence and encourage listening skills, precis, dialogue, discussion and debate – the skills you will need in the workforce.

How do you put your argument forward in a professional manner? How do you deliver your message succinctly and how do you build upon your unique strengths?

Within the learning units we will analyse the power of professional speakers and have a debate session.

Assessments are delivered with a light-hearted approach, so you are learning but having fun too. You will receive constructive feedback and develop resilience strategies.

Programme

The content will guide you through different aspects of effective communication, from calming your nerves and developing your confidence, to developing your arguments and delivering your message concisely. We’ll help you identify and build on your own personal attributes, develop your resilience and channel your nerves. We’ll analyse the power of professional speakers, learn how to read and engage an audience, and explore the ways and effects of delivering ‘data with a soul’, but most importantly, we’ll be having fun along the way! All you need to complete this course, is access to a computer, a little bit of curiosity, and the willingness to learn. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Successfully deliver an 10-minute presentation to the group audience using Panopto.
  2. Design an academic poster and deliver to peers.
  3. Reflect upon the sessions and personal growth using the reflective writing exercise. 

Assessments

  1. Academic poster (700 words 40%)
  2. Presentation (10 minutes 30%)
  3. Reflective journal (2000 words 30%)

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.

As this is an online course, you would need the following:

• Internet access
• Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also be of benefit
• Use of the Chrome web-browser where possible.
