Overview

This course will focus on contextual awareness of the genre of Plant Portraits and giving students techniques to understand how they were produced.

Programme

The course is taught through a series of video demonstrations, downloadable handouts and PowerPoint presentations all accessed through blackboard across 5 units:

Unit 1: Tonal Studies: Monchromatic Drawing and Painting Techniques

Unit 2: How Plants Grow:  Exploring materials and methods

Unit 3: Miniature Portraits: Composition and Colour

Unit 4: An Insects Eye View: Further Painting Techniques

Unit 5: Portraits of Plants in Places - Herbacious Boarder, Hedgerow and Woodland

In addition to this we will have 3 face to face teaching sessions, where we will make the most of the inspirational flora found on surrounding grounds and woodlands for on location drawing and painting, weather permitting.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Apply tonal values and modelling in monochrome to a painting/ drawing of a Flower Still Life relating to Project One
  2. Demonstrate a range of painting techniques such as colour mixing and accurate scaling to produce and execute a Miniature Painting.
  3. Use a visual notebook to evaluate the learning experience, research and document their planning.
  4. With the aid of photography, explore compositional structures and painting techniques to produce an original painting made on location.
