Overview

An inspiring new course which will cover a variety of forms, textures, patterns and colours. This is an ideal course for anyone undertaking field studies as well as art courses, who wish to develop their observational, drawing skills and knowledge of this varied subject. The techniques and styles of contemporary and historical artists will also be discussed. Demonstrations, individual advice and assistance as well as handouts will be given throughout each session. A wide variety of specimens will be available to work from. Students will present a sketchbook of detailed drawings of seed heads using graphite.

Programme

This is a 5-credit module and so students should aim to complete at least 50 or more hours of study to get the most out of this module and to fulfil the criteria for the course. The module will cover fine drawing techniques starting with the basics, using graphite and other dry media, to depict a variety of seed-head/pod forms, with accuracy and detail.  Some botanical illustration skills like dissecting and scaling up very small subjects will also be demonstrated.
Each unit within the module will enable you to practice technique, develop your ideas, reflect upon what you have learnt and conduct research to complement your study and extend your learning. All module content is accessed through our online learning portal; you need access to a computer, a camera to send your work online to your tutor and to be proficient in using email.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Complete a visual diary containing class studies and self-directed study demonstrating new drawing techniques
