Overview

A fascinating new course which will cover a variety of specialist drawing and watercolour techniques and materials for depicting a wide variety of Mosses, Lichens and Liverworts, their colours, forms and unique characteristics. This is an ideal course for anyone undertaking field studies, as well as Art courses, who wish to develop their observational,  recording and fine art skills and knowledge of this fascinating subject.  The techniques and styles of contemporary and historical artists will also be discussed. Demonstrations, individual advice and assistance as well as handouts will be given throughout each session.  Specimens will be available to work from.

Programme

This course will be covering the fascinating subject of Mosses, lichens and liverworts.

The initial focus of the course is on exploration and experimentation, which will be documented in your study book, as the course progresses, we will then work towards creating more resolved whole specimen studies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:   

  1. Demonstrate techniques which allow the accurate depiction through drawing and painting of the form, textures, colours, patterns and detail of a variety of moss, lichen and liverwort types.
  2. Demonstrate problem solving and the exploration of techniques, colour mixing, composition and different drawing and painting materials.
  3. Demonstrate analysis of the role and artwork of historical and contemporary Natural History painters.
