Overview
This 5-credit module would help students to develop an appreciation and knowledge about Dragonflies, through a study of the anatomy, various species within the classification, for example Damselflies, Demoiselles etc, and the particular and specialised habitats in which they exist. A context of relevant historical and contemporary artists work will be given to support the study.
Students will learn drawing and watercolour techniques, observational and identification skills, and recording findings in the field. This is an ideal course for anyone interested in Natural History, students undertaking field studies courses, as well as art and design courses, and the biological sciences, who wish to develop their knowledge and gain the skills to depict their subject
Programme
In this module we’ll discover the anatomy of the dragonfly and damselfly, their life cycle, and their habitat. It includes demonstrations in different media, from graphite, pen and charcoal to watercolour and pen and wash, to depict the forms of these amazing insects, with accuracy of colour and detail. It also includes regular tutor feedback. Keep an eye out on walks for dead specimens and take your own photos to work from. If you cannot find any specimens, then there will be good photographic reference to work from in the course materials.
