Introduction to Mathematics 2
This is the second of a two-part online course, accepted across Wales as an equivalency for GCSE mathematics for Nursing and Initial Teacher Education. This self-paced learning experience offers dynamic, easy-to-follow videos paired with weekly practice-based worksheets that guide you from the fundamentals to achieving a GCSE Level C proficiency in maths.

Overview
This module aims to provide a strong foundation in statistics, ratios, measurements and conversions and geometry (including area and perimeter of 2D shapes, volume and surface of 3D shapes, circle theorems, transformations and constructions). The course is delivered via a series of online pre-recorded lectures and live workshops allowing students to learn through practice.
Programme
Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practise the techniques they have learned and develop their skills. Alongside the learning materials on Blackboard the tutor will be on hand via email to answer any queries and provide guidance throughout the course.
Content will be delivered in 9 sessions with an additional session for summary and revision.
- Statistics (mean, mode, median, range), plots and charts.
- Statistics (frequency polygons, cumulative frequency diagram, box and whisker plots)
- Rates, rations and time.
- Measurements and conversion (length, weight, volume)
- Geometry (angle, bearing, square, rectangle, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles)
- Geometry (cubes, cuboid, cylinders, volume, density, word problems)
- Triangles and trigonometry (Pythagoras and word problems)
- Transformations (rotations, reflections, enlargements)
- Constructions and Circle theorems.
- Summary and revision.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Understand basic statistical terminology, bar charts, pie charts, box-and-whisker plots, scatterplots and frequency diagrams and determine means, medians, ranges and modes, rates and time, and understand ratios.
- Confidently use different measurements and exchange between units (both imperial and metric)
- Understand and solve problems involving right-angled triangles and trigonometry (including word problems), angles, bearing, 2D and 3D shapes.
- Carry out geometric transformations including rotations, reflections, enlargements.
- Construct angles and shapes and understand circle theorems involving angles.
Assessments
- 10 x short assignments – take-away exam (40% of the overall mark)
- 2 hour written exam (60% of the overall mark)
Reading Suggestions
Reading suggestions will be offered throughout the course.
