Overview
The Kingdom of Fungi is a fascinating, ancient and diverse one. In this introductory course, we delve into this world, looking at the vital ecological role fungi play in our forests and showing how species vary according to habitat - be this woodland or pasture. Although we will touch on many aspects of mycology the focus will be on how to identify the larger fungi with a look at some of the key edible and poisonous species in the UK. It includes an overview of the historical relationship in Britain and Europe, with a look at the use of fungi for food, medicine and craft.
Programme
Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practise the techniques they have learned and develop their skills. Students will be encouraged to share their own work and participate in discussions on Blackboard. Alongside the learning materials on Blackboard the tutor will be on hand via email to answer any queries and provide guidance throughout the course. They will also participate in the online discussions.
Optional Webinar (date TBC): A chance to introduce yourselves, meet the tutor and meet the other students and be introduced to the course.
