Identifying Grasses, Sedges and Rushes
Identifying Grasses, Sedges and Rushes can be studied as a stand-alone course and a key course for the Certificate of Higher Education in Field Ecology at Aberystwyth University.
Key Facts
Language: English
Duration: 10 Weeks
Number of Credits: 10
Tutor: Rachel Dye
Learning Method: Online.
Level: This module is at CQFW Level 4
Module Code: XS19010

This course is available to book.
Overview
The module will outline the growth staging and identification of species of grasses, sedges and rushes. Identification keys will be used to better understand their morphology. Over the course of 9 weeks, learners will become familiar with a good range of common species relating these species to their preferred habitat and be able to identify these species in the field. Through lectures and seminars delivered by an expert in the field, learners will study the structure and terminology associated with grasses, sedges and rushes, investigate their key characteristics and distinguishing features as well as learning how to use floras and keys.
Programme
During the course, learners will study the following:
- Units 1 and 2: Introduction to the course and the broad content around the ecosystem to be discussed. Brief overview of assignment expectations and intro to how to keep detailed drawings and analysis. Begin producing an annotated reference collection of common specimens.
- Unit 3: The structure and terminology associated with the grasses, sedges and rushes (Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae).
- Units 4 and 5: Investigating the characteristic and key features that distinguish grasses, sedges and rushes (Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae).
- Units 6 and 7: Using floras and keys – the range of publications available and which is most appropriate to use in different circumstances. Familiarization with the terminology and key features used in identification of the groups.
- Unit 8: Using a flora with keys to identify common species from, local habitats (both flowering and vegetative specimens online).
- Unit 9: Assignment support session
Learning Outcomes
