Overview

We all interact with each other and the wider environment that we live in. With such intertwined and complex systems how can we begin to understand how it all fits together and how our actions affect the natural world around us? Ecology helps to explain the patterns we see in the natural world and the ways in which people have changed them. Students will gain a broad knowledge and understanding of these interactions of living organisms with each other and the environment in which they live. The cycles and energy flows that power the ecosystems of our planet, the complexities of food webs, and the interrelationships and competition both between and within species and population dynamics are all included.

Programme

This is a self-paced, online learning module with 1-2 live webinars. The content is delivered using Video PowerPoint lectures and external video content. Activities, discussion boards and mini quizzes will be embedded throughout the course so the tutor can provide support and trickle feedback. A number of the activities will help the students to prepare for the assignments.

Unit 1 – Introduction to Ecology.

Unit 2 - Levels of ecological organisation – from organism to biosphere.

Unit 3 - Organisms and populations.

Unit 4 - Human population: growth and impacts.

Unit 5 – Communities.

Unit 6 - Predation, competition and cooperation.

Unit 7 - Habitats & Ecosystems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Define the key ecological terms and basic concepts.
  2. Describe the directional flow of energy and the cyclic flow of nutrients in an ecosystem.
  3. Determine trophic relationships in an ecosystem.
  4. Interpret population information and describe interactions and relationships between organisms.

Assessments

  1. Data Analysis Task (30%)
  2. Site Study: 1500 words (70%)

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.

As this is an online course, you would need the following:

  • Internet access.
