Overview

Welcome to the world of writing creatively for children of all ages. Words that run with Wolves can be studied as a stand-alone module, but it could also follow on from the introductory 5-credit online module: An Introduction to Writing for Children. This 10-credit module builds on the introductory course and deepens the student’s understanding and experience of this genre. It draws upon some fantastic, published works for children to explore the multifaceted needs of the various age groups and help aspiring writers produce writing for their intended child audience. We will look at how stories can entertain and teach children, but also how they may help them deal with difficult current world events such as climate change, inequalities and social media as well as other challenges in their own lives. It will also feature illustrating and puppet-making to accompany oral tales and writing fact and academic books for children.

Programme

Activities and tasks will be embedded into each unit so students can practise the techniques they have learned and develop their skills. Students will be encouraged to share their own work. Alongside the learning materials on Blackboard the tutor will be on hand via email to answer any queries and provide guidance throughout the course.
