This course gives students the chance to study the history of the family in turbulent twentieth-century Britain. It will examine how the institution of ‘the family’ engaged with and was shaped by factors such as gender, childhood, the state, and warfare. The course will chart the evolution of the family from the middle-class Victorian ideal to the multiple ideas of ‘family’ at the turn of the millennium.
Utilising a variety of resources and sources, students will explore the changing nature of the family throughout the twentieth century and examine the various issues and sensitivities surrounding research during this century.
