This clay making course will use forms found in nature, seed heads, pods, driftwood etc. as a starting point, through drawings in a visual diary, to develop inspiration to create clay forms developed from these original drawings. The research of other makers both historical and contemporary will help inform this creative journey.
Students will explore clay making skills relevant to the creation of their ideas, with a variety of techniques explored through the class learning experience and will complete a fired piece of pottery inspired by this creative journey.
The Syllabus will include:
Observational drawings from seed pods and nature studies etc. using a variety of drawing media. These research drawings will be developed into creative possibilities through the development of ideas and visual research of other maker’s work.
Clay outcomes will be created using techniques such as coiling, pinch pots, hand-building and slab rolling together, as appropriate for the work. The exploration of surface effects such as texture and glazing will also be explored.
This course will be suitable for all levels of ability and experience, the necessary skills will be taught as part of this face-to-face course.
