This is a practical course consisting of 10 mini-modules for the student to complete at home, followed by two days working together in Aberystwyth on a final project. This will allow students to share the working experiments and come together for the final learning project.
During the course, the student explores numerous ways of working with textiles whilst exploring a broad range of traditional observational drawing and design methods. The course will introduce students to inventive weaving and textile construction techniques that do not require a loom or any specialist equipment. They will explore different yarns and textures to raise their awareness of design and colour theory, helping them understand the limitations of different fabrics. They will learn basic natural dyeing techniques leading to further independent exploration, and they will be encouraged to build on an awareness of colour, surface and texture seen in the landscape and their immediate surroundings.
Students will be encouraged to become self-expressive and will have plenty of opportunities to develop confidence through the use of a variety of materials and techniques, thus developing awareness of the creative potential in this contemporary art form. Most of the materials used will be recycled, second-hand or already in the student’s possession.
Students will undertake 10 separate mini-projects, supported by online learning materials and tutorial guidance. Each one will have a short written task involved, to explain what they aim to achieve and how. Each one will provide them with samples and materials to go into their submission portfolio, and recording their work will feed into their visual diary.
