Overview

This course which will cover a variety of specialist drawing, painting and printmaking techniques and materials for capturing the characteristics of different tree species and woodland habitats including structure, colour, light and texture.  Through a local woodland visit, demonstrations and practical time in the studio, students will develop their observational, recording and artistic skills whilst gaining experience of a variety of approaches and media which are transferable to a range of subject matter.

Programme

This is an exciting course charting the arrival of spring in our local woodlands. The course will be based in a venue but weather permitting there may be several sessions working on location in the nearby Penglais woods.

During the course we will explore linear and tonal drawing techniques for depicting trees and woodland landscapes, trying a variety of materials and methods, transitioning from drawing to painting, exploring a variety of mixed media combinations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Observe and effectively depict the characteristic structures and textures of different tree types and woodland habitats. Demonstrate analysis of the role and artwork of historical and contemporary Natural History painters.
  2. Use a variety of techniques and media to record from life, working on location to describe different tree types.
  3. Keep a visual diary of experimental and exploratory studies including technical, reference and reflective notes.
  4. Create effective colour mixes and mark make to depict the colours, texture and atmosphere woodlands throughout the year through the portfolio and fieldwork studies.
