Overview
This Level One module aims to introduce students to the subject area and to learning at higher education level. This is a practical watercolour module, it introduces the student to the different techniques of watercolour with an emphasis on the local surroundings of seascapes and skies. Drawing, painting, evaluative and comparative study skills will be taught in an informal way.
An extended project will include the drawing of boats and it's related perspective drawing. The module will also include the study of contemporary painters and painters in history who choose to represent the subject in different ways.

Syllabus:
• Discussion: painting moving skies, changing weather.
• Peculiarities of British weather: quality of light.
• Wet on wet painting.
• Tonal painting.
• Colour mixing, greys with complementary highlights.
• Cloud study sheet.
• Scrubbing back.
• Analyzing styles of paintings.
• Reflected, local and complementary colour.
• Aerial perspective.
• Drawing projects: boats in perspective, landscape and coastline in perspective.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Define the mixes of colour needed for painting seascapes in all weathers, atmospheres and interpret the use of tone in colour and experiment with a variety of painting styles.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of wet on wet and drawing techniques and study skills in research in the visual diary.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of artists who have used the sea as inspiration for their work and an ability to articulate, evaluate and define the techniques used in their drawing and painting.
