Overview

This module gives further techniques and research in to the effects of colour on artworks for the artist and the viewer. This will be taught with a thematic approach considering the effects and histories behind blue, red, yellow and red.

Programme

This course will be taught as 4 x 5 hour sessions with gaps in between to allow students to make individual studies and taught in a Tutorial module style with a flipped classroom approach. Students will determine their particular area of research relating to the different colours and the consequent effects. Students will be able to access Blackboard for extended study as well as being able to download an Introductory letter for some pre-course study.

The course will be taught through a theme of colours

  • Session One: History of pigments: Blue
    Initial tutorials
    Home study: Work on a self-directed research relating to this theme.
  • Session Two: The Modern Colour wheel: Red
    Individual tutorials
    Home study: Develop self-directed study
  • Session Three: Yellow and the Colour Field Painters.
    Individual Tutorials
    Home study: Develop self-directed project
    A gap of time
  • Session Four: Evaluation and group critique

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:   

  1. Critique and identify the work of a number of contemporary painters whose work encompasses different uses of colour.
  2. Use their research to inform their own painting.
  3. Demonstrate the effects and impact of colours.

 Assessments

  1. A portfolio of paintings (80%)
  2. A visual diary of supporting material including art historical/contemporary study (20%)
