Overview

Basics: Hand built Ceramics is a basic skills module using clay techniques. We will cover the basics of coiling, slab building, pinch pots and surface texture. 

Programme

The module will be taught over a series of sessions that will cover test tiles and surfaces and give the student the opportunity to deconstruct a piece from antiquity and demonstrate through new-found knowledge how this piece was made. 

The course will cover:

  • Types of clay and other materials used in ceramics
  • Construction methods
  • Wedging, preparing and storing clay
  • Firing and firing techniques
  • Developing your ideas
  • Analysing pieces you see
  • Creating test tiles
  • Types and methods of decoration
  • Pinching and coiling
  • Slab rolling and construction methods
  • Working from drawings and building on a form

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Show proficiency through a series of hand building techniques based on a theme supplied by the tutor.
  2. Show new found knowledge through a short written piece explaining how it was constructed.

  2. Written analysis 10%
