Overview
Basics: Hand built Ceramics is a basic skills module using clay techniques. We will cover the basics of coiling, slab building, pinch pots and surface texture.
Programme
The module will be taught over a series of sessions that will cover test tiles and surfaces and give the student the opportunity to deconstruct a piece from antiquity and demonstrate through new-found knowledge how this piece was made.
The course will cover:
- Types of clay and other materials used in ceramics
- Construction methods
- Wedging, preparing and storing clay
- Firing and firing techniques
- Developing your ideas
- Analysing pieces you see
- Creating test tiles
- Types and methods of decoration
- Pinching and coiling
- Slab rolling and construction methods
- Working from drawings and building on a form
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Show proficiency through a series of hand building techniques based on a theme supplied by the tutor.
- Show new found knowledge through a short written piece explaining how it was constructed.
