Altered Book: Cover to cover can be studied as a stand-alone course and is an optional course for the Certificate of Higher Education in Art and Design at Aberystwyth University.

Overview

This self paced, online study module will guide you through some of the techniques and processes employed in re-using books and other texts. You will be challenged to think creatively and to explore other ‘book’ artists' work.

Programme

You will discover how books are made and learn about their cultural significance, in order to help develop your sensitivity to their specific qualities. The course will be divided into 6 units with tasks that require completion; 

Unit 1: Parts of a book.
Unit 2: Pop-up's. 
Unit 3: Using a book as a 'prop'.
Unit 4: Dioramas.
Unit 5: Folded and small books.
Unit 6: Completion.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Produce samples of taught techniques within the module units.
  2. Produce a written review of an artist’s work to demonstrate awareness of Contemporary Book Art.
  3. Produce an altered book for assessment showing new techniques and contextualization of artists studied.
