Injury - Needlestick (Hypodermic)
First Aid Treatment for Needlestick Injuries
In the event of needlestick injury from a hypodermic needle (e.g. in a rubbish bag / bin, on the ground or a chair etc) the following treatment should be given
- Encourage the puncture injury to bleed
- Wash well under cold running water without soap and cover with a dry dressing
- Seek medical advice as soon as possible
Note a protective injection against Hepatitis B (but not HIV) can be given, but needs to be done within 4 hours. Check with the Hospital Accident and Emergency Department for their recommendation.
Also:
- Inform the local Safety Officer.
- Inform the Manager/ Supervisor of the injured person.
- Incident Report form (S002F) to be completed.
