Support at Work
Mentoring/Coaching
As a large and diverse employer the University can offer excellent opportunities to access support through mentoring and coaching. To discuss your specific needs why not contact a member of the HR team to explore the opportunities available.

Welsh Mentoring Scheme
If you are learning or have learned Welsh in the past and would like the opportunity to practice what you have learned with a fluent Welsh speaker on an informal and one to one basis, the University's 'Cynllun Mentora Dysgwyr' (Mentoring Learners Scheme) is available to all members of staff who are Welsh learners (whether they are currently attending lessons or not) and Welsh speakers.

Counselling
The University offers external counselling services which gives staff a completely confidential means of accessing support for a range of issues. These sessions can assist an individual in exploring problems or barriers and provide support in identifying ways to change and clarify an issue. The service aims to schedule an initial meeting with a counsellor to assess your needs. If counselling is recommended, ongoing appointments will be arranged.
For further details or a referral please see the Employee Assistance Programme
Supporting Staff who are Supporting Students in Crisis
Staff in both academic and service departments may potentially be supporting students experiencing a personal, emotional or mental wellbeing crisis. The University recognises that it can be stressful for staff to interact with someone in distress and may result in staff not only feeling unsure about how to respond but also feeling responsible, helpless, fearful, frustrated or angry. The University therefore has a strategy for addressing the support needs of those staff who are supporting students in crisis, please refer to the following link:
Mediation
The University offers an opportunity for any member of staff experiencing conflict or dispute in any form within the University to engage in a constructive and confidential dialogue with the support of a member of the mediation team. The team has been drawn from a range of staff across the University and has been trained by ACAS in Internal Workplace Mediation. The sessions are entirely voluntary and remain wholly confidential to the participants.
For further details contact a Mediator and Mediation Co-ordinator, Graham Lewis on ex. 1802 (01970 621802) or mediation@aber.ac.uk.
Equality Scheme
The Equality Scheme aims to demonstrate that equality and diversity are at the heart of an inclusive and supportive environment in which dignity, respect and co-operation are intrinsic in all our activites and support opportunities for everyone to achieve their full potential. The Scheme includes race, disability and gender and incorporates age, religion/belief and sexual orientation.

Dignity & Respect at Work and Health & Wellbeing Policies
These policies were developed in partnership with our recognised Trade Unions as a means of establishing an agreed standard and code of conduct for all within the University as a workplace. The Dignity and Respect at Work policy is designed to enable individuals to recognise negative behaviour and to deal with this constructively. Similarly, the Health & Wellbeing Policy was developed to identify issues which might affect the wellbeing of staff within the workplace (including stress, poor work/life balance, nutrition and exercise) and to generate potential solutions to these issues.
