Staying Calm During Clearing

At Aberystwyth University our students’ health and wellbeing is a top priority. We realise that Clearing can be stressful at times and we want to try and make the process as straightforward as possible.

Here are five top tips on how to stay calm and positive throughout the Clearing process.

  1. Prepare as much as you can - Prepare in advance for different scenarios, so nothing takes you by surprise. That way, whatever happens, you’ll have a plan ready for action if you find yourself in Clearing. Research potential courses and universities before results day, weigh up the pros and cons of each, and make a shortlist. Write down your shortlisted courses in order of preference, with contact details for each, as well as any notes or questions.

If you have any questions about our courses or studying at Aberystwyth before results day, you can contact us on enquiries@aber.ac.uk / 01970 622065.

  2. Keep a positive mindset - Try not to be downhearted if you didn’t get the grades you expected. Clearing is another opportunity to get where you want to go. Remember, you’re not alone, there are thousands of students like you that secure university places through Clearing each year.

  3. Be open minded - Even if you were 100% certain about what you wanted to study when you made your UCAS application, take some time to think about other avenues. Perhaps there’s a course you never even thought about which is actually perfect for you. Now’s your chance to reconsider your path. So, keep an open mind and look at courses and universities you hadn’t thought of before.

  4. Seek support - Chatting to friends and family should help ease the pressure of decision making, and a second opinion can be so valuable if you’re feeling unsure. Talk through your options to clarify the right choices for you.

  5. Starting the process - It might seem like everything needs to be done now, but it’s important you don’t feel rushed.  When you’re ready, get in touch with the universities you’re interested in. At Aberystwyth, in addition to calling our Helpline – 0800 121 40 80 – you can apply for a Clearing place online, and from results day onwards contact us on Live Chat or register for a call-back.

Once you’ve been made an offer, don’t feel pressured to make a decision. Take the time you need to think things through. Just make sure you write down any deadlines, so you don’t forget.
