Staff Guidelines: Websites (Welsh Language Standards)

  1. All web pages and online services must be published in Welsh.
  2. The Welsh pages must be fully operational.
  3. Welsh and English content must be updated / published at the same time.
  4. The Welsh and English content should be the same and there should be no delay between publishing the Welsh and English versions of the website.
  5. Each page must include a ‘Cymraeg’ / ‘English’ link to the corresponding page in Welsh or English. The ‘Cymraeg’ / ‘English’ link should not revert to the homepage or to a different page.
  6. Welsh webpages should not be treated less favourably in terms of formatting, design, display, or in terms of the text included.
  7. Hyperlinks on Welsh web pages must lead to the Welsh version of that page / website. With external websites the links should refer to the Welsh version of the website if available
  8. On Welsh web pages, links to download documents should be for the Welsh version of the document/form. Most documents/forms published by the University are available in Welsh and English, but if the document is not available in Welsh (e.g. external report / research publications / academic publications) please include a link to the English version of the document on the Welsh page.

FAQs

Do I need to translate teaching material or research publications for the website?

No. The Welsh Language Standards are not applicable to academic teaching material or research publications.

I need to include a hyperlink to an external document and the document is not available in Welsh. Should I leave this out on the Welsh page?

No. Please include the link on the Welsh website and note that this is an external document.

I have sent a translation request for a web page. Can I publish the English version and note on the Welsh side that it is awaiting translation?

No. Web pages must be published in Welsh / English at the same time. If your translation request is urgent, please contact the translation team to discuss cyfieithu@aber.ac.uk

We have an interactive page where students and the public can contribute. Are we required to translate external content?

If the text has been published by an external contributor or a student (not on behalf of the university), it is not necessary to publish bilingual (unless the university re-words or summarises the comments). For example, student comments on the ‘Tell Us Now’ pages are published in their original language (either Welsh or English), but the university’s response is published bilingually.
