Technical Accessibility Roadmap for Aberystwyth University’s Intranet and Student Hub

Improvements Required

Many of the improvements identified are outside the capability of the University to resolve, as it procures the system from a third-party provider. The University will work with the third-party provider (Microsoft) to seek to identify solutions for the following:

Colour

On a small number of pages, there is not sufficient colour contrast on some icons. This can mean that people with visual impairments cannot see text within the icons. This doesn’t meet WCAG success criterion 1.4.3 Contract (Minimum). We will work our way through the site to identify and update any icons which do not have sufficient colour contrast.

Headings

Some pages skip a heading level. This is confusing when the pages are viewed using assistive technology. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships. We will work our way through the site, updating pages add headings where necessary.

Some pages have missing heading 1s. This is confusing when the pages are viewed using assistive technology. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships. We will work our way through the site, updating pages add headings where necessary.

Images

Some images don’t have a text alternative. This means that the information in the images isn’t available to people using assistive technology. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 Non-Text Content. We will work our way through the site, adding appropriate alternative text to existing images.

Keyboard

Some areas of pages (including main navigation) cannot be accessed via keyboard tab order. This means that the information may not be available to people navigating via keyboard. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 Keyboard. We will liaise with our third-party provider to seek ways to ensure all areas of the page can be accessed via keyboard tab order.

Links

Some pages have multiple links using the same text. This could be confusing to people using assistive technology. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We will work our way through the site to address pages with repeated link text.

Regions

Some regional elements do not have an accessible name. This could mean that users of assistive technology may find it difficult to decipher the purpose or intent of the element, and be able to distinguish the element from others on the same page. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships. We will liaise with our third-party provider to seek ways to ensure all regional elements can have an accessible name.
