Technical Accessibility Roadmap for Aberystwyth University’s Admissions Portal
Improvements Required
Colour
Some text doesn’t have sufficient contrast with the background colour, so the text may not be readable by people with visual impairments. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast (Minimum)). We will explore ways of making text more distinguishable from the background, by ensuring sufficient colour contrast.
Forms
Some form fields do not have appropriate autocomplete attributes defined. This can mean that it's more difficult for people using assistive technology to understand what data should be entered. This doesn't meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.5 Identify Input Purpose. We are working on making improvements to all of our forms to ensure that all relevant fields have autocomplete attributes.
Form controls do not appear sufficiently distinct from their surroundings, so that people with visual impairments are still able to clearly see them. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast. We will explore ways of making form controls more distinguishable from their surroundings, either by ensuring sufficient colour contrast, or introducing distinguishing styling.
Some buttons do not work when using assistive technology. This means that people using assistive technology may not be able to complete the form with the information required. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 Keyboard. We will work our way through the pages to fix any broken buttons.
Headings
Some pages do not have a visible or appropriate Heading 1, so the main page topic may not be accessible to people using assistive technology. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships). We will update pages with appropriate and visible headings.
Landmarks
The majority of pages do not contain a main landmark in order to identify the primary content of the page. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 5.3.4 Landmark Roles. We will review the site design to ensure that the primary content is included in a main landmark.
Links
Some links are only distinguishable from the surrounding text by colour, so the links may not be visually evident without colour vision. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.1 (Use of Colour). We will explore ways of making links more distinguishable from the surrounding text, either by ensuring sufficient colour contrast between text, or introducing distinguishing styling.
The majority of pages do not include links which allow users to skip to the main content of the page. This can make it difficult for people using assistive technology to navigate the page and find the main content. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1 Bypass Blocks. We will consider ways of introducing links which allow users to skip to the main content of the page where appropriate.
Tables
Some tables do not use the scope attribute to associate header cells and data cells in data tables. This can mean that it's more difficult for people using assistive technology to understand the data presented. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships). We are working on making improvements to all of our tables, to ensure that all column headings have been aligned with the correct scope attributes.
Text
When increasing font size, particularly when using mobile devices, some text is hidden or partially hidden, so people may not be able to see all of the text. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.4 (Resize Text). We will review the site design to ensure that text is not hidden or partially hidden when increasing font size.
Recent Accessibility Improvements Made
Forms
The date picker used on some of our forms could not be accessed using a keyboard, so people filling out the form had to enter details manually. While this met WCAG 2.1 success criteria 2.2.1 (Keyboard) as there was an alternative method of submitting the information, the picker
In some of our forms, the focus order didn’t follow a logical order, so people using the form may have missed a required field when filling out the form using keyboard only. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.3 (Focus Order). The focus order of pages has been amended to ensure a logical order and inclusion of all elements.
Images
There were some images which had the same alt text as other images on the page, which could have been confusing for people using assistive technology. This didn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content). Images have either been removed or different alternative text provided.
