During these challenging times, it is gratifying to know that there is such support for the research, policy, practice and teaching of small business and entrepreneurship. Our group of Founding Organisational Members will now become our first point-of-contact for entrepreneurship policy consultations, requests for expert input, and guidance on the future direction of the Institute. It will also be our pleasure to showcase the work of your institution in the entrepreneurial space and share this with our networks.

Aberystwyth Business School improves its research performance in REF 2021
The quality of research at Aberystwyth University’s Business School has increased significantly, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. The research assessment found that all of the submitted research publications were internationally significant, with 12.8% being categorised as ‘world-leading’. Further, there has been a 5 percentage point increase in the research that is recognised as being world-leading in terms of its ‘impact’. The impact case studies submitted to REF included: research that provided a framework for incorporating nature’s values into policies such as the Convention on Biological Diversity; and research that informed police strategies for tackling farm and rural crime. The Business School’s improvements in research performance reflect the wider enhancement to research activities seen across Aberystwyth University, where 98% is of an internationally recognised standard or higher.
Professor Mike Christie, Director of Research at the Business School said: “The improvements in the quality of research produced by staff in the Business School reflects the dedication of our researchers to produce world-class research and innovation that has impacts across the planet”.
Research in the Business School is organised around two research centres:
- Centre for Responsible Societies (CRiSis): which adopts an inter-disciplinary approach to exploring how assessing the multiple values of nature can help responsible societies address environmental challenges;
- Centre for Creativity, Leadership and Regional Economies (CLaRE): which adopts cross-disciplinary research into organisational practice and policy, community and local regeneration, and the value of creative-based thinking at local, regional and international levels.
Prof Andrew Thomas, Head of the Business School said: “Research is a core element of Business School activities. Not only does our research deliver real benefits in Wales and beyond, but it also informs our learning and teaching. We ensure that the results of our research are integrated into our teaching and learning so that our students receive the most up to date and cutting-edge information relating to their subject area. For example, we have recently introduced two new study programmes (Economics and Climate Change, and Business and Climate Change) to reflect our emerging research strengths”. Aberystwyth Business School has consistently ranked in the Top 10 in the UK for its teaching and student experience.

‘Best of Wales’ Aber grad set to help Welsh food businesses

An award-winning Aberystwyth University graduate has joined a major initiative to support Welsh food businesses.
Megi Williams, who graduated in Business and Management in 2015 and was awarded the Best of Wales prize for her work as a Welsh medium student, has joined Cywain as its Executive Officer.
A service delivered by independent economic development company Menter a Busnes, Cywain supports Welsh food businesses to grow by providing direct support, helping to improve business knowledge and skills and offering opportunities to collaborate with other businesses.
Speaking of her new role, Megi said: “I’m delighted to have joined Cywain at such an important time, when so many businesses are looking to rebuild after COVID, and I’m really looking forward to building relationships and helping Welsh food and drinks businesses."
Originally from Aberdaron on the Llŷn Peninsula, Megi was inspired to pursue a career in business while studying Business at A-Level in Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Pwllheli.
At Aberystwyth University, Megi chose to study a large proportion of her undergraduate degree through the medium of Welsh.
At her graduation she was presented with the ‘Best of Wales’ prize, sponsored by holiday cottage agency Best of Wales, for displaying excellence through business studies in the Welsh language.
Megi added: “Studying Business and Management has given me an excellent foundation and understanding of business, and ideal for my role with Cywain. The support from staff and the Business School was excellent and the campus and study environment was great. I particularly liked the marketing elements of the course as it is a subject that is of great interest to me, and being able to continue my studies through the medium of Welsh and English was great as so much of what I do on a daily basis involves both languages.
“I also really enjoyed the social aspect of studying and living in Aberystwyth. I was part of the Welsh community around UMCA, the Welsh Students’ Union at Aberystwyth, where we did all sorts of activities including ‘following’ the six nations games to Scotland and France which were always a lot of fun."
Dr Wyn Morris, Senior Lecturer in Management at Aberystwyth Business School has congratulated Megi on her recent appointment.
Dr Morris said: “We are delighted that Megi has been appointed to Menter a Busnes. Megi was an excellent student and studied the majority of her course through the medium of Welsh. It is rewarding to see our students’ progress to such prominent roles, and I wish Megi all the best in her new post and look forward to working with her and supporting Cywain."

CLaRE Symposium 23rd June 2021
The Centre for Local and Regional Enterprise (CLaRE) annual research symposium will take place on the 23rd if June 2021. This year's symposium is entitled 'Regenerating Rural Communities'. The symposium seeks to promote research relating to the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on rural communities (defined in this instance as communities, organisations and individuals operating/living outside of cities). It aims to showcase the research of academics, practitioners, and research students across Aberystwyth University and its stakeholder networks. The symposium is been held in conjunction with the Regional Centres of Expertise (Cymru) network (in particular, the Resilient communities' hub).
