Professor Aled Jones
13 April 2012
Professor Aled Jones, Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor at Aberystwyth University, has been named as the new Vice President of the National Library of Wales.
Professor Jones, who will continue as Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor at Aberystwyth University, will take on the new role, which is for a term of 4 years, on 1 May 2012.
As Vice President, Professor Jones will promote the Library and its work both within Wales and beyond. He will also represent the Library in its dealings with the Welsh Government and the National Assembly for Wales.
Professor Jones may also undertake the functions of the President of the Library should the need arise.
Professor Jones specialises in the history of modern Wales. He has worked extensively in the collections of the National Library since 1976, and joined its Board of Trustees in 2009. He holds no other Ministerial public appointments.
Speaking of his appointment, Professor Jones said, “My appointment to the post of Vice President of the National Library is a pleasure, an honour and a big responsibility. As a fervent user of the outstanding services provided by the Library, over a period of thirty years, I am aware of the importance of this institution in Welsh culture and Welsh life in general.
At the same time, I consider the Library as a window which enables us to view and engage with a wider range of global knowledge. I look forward with the greatest enthusiasm to the work of supporting the mission of the Library, and to working closely with the Library's staff and users, the Board of Trustees and the new President, Sir Deian Hopkin.”
President of the Library and Aberystwyth University alumnus, Sir Deian Hopkin said: “I am delighted at the appointment of Professor Aled Jones as Vice-President. He is a distinguished historian with a rich experience in university management and is deeply committed to the Library. I look forward to working closely with him and other members of the Board to support the Librarian and the staff to realise the Library's ambitions.”
Professor Aled Jones’ appointment follows Mr Arwel Ellis Owen’s term as Vice President, which came to an end on 30 November 2011.
