Brief description
What do we mean by the term 'performance'? How do we analyse a stage production? The lecture programme will begin by looking at contemporary theatre practice: the process of transferring a dramatic text from page to stage, and the function of the director and designer; the second part of the lecture programme will widen the discussion into areas of non-text based performance studies: devised work, physical theatre, and non-Western theatre practice. The practical classes will introduce students to some basic performing skills, including explorations of physicality and movement, improvisation and the elements of creating dramatic character.
