Environment and sustainability at Aber Uni

In this week’s blog, Masters student Adriana Cahill discusses some of the ways that you could get involved in green issues at the University:

There are many ways to get involved in environmental and sustainability efforts at Aberystwyth University - whether it’s making small commitments to change, such as bringing a reusable coffee cup to the cafés on campus, or larger commitments such as joining volunteer organisations and participating in their events.

Taking small steps is a great way to start your sustainability journey. The Students’ Union shop sells reusable coffee cups that you can use at any café on campus, which also means you avoid the 40p disposable cup charge.

If you have periods, the Students’ Union has an amazing range of free reusable period products available. They have menstrual cups (which include a sterilising cup), period pants in sizes S to 4XL and in many different styles, as well as reusable pads that include a wet bag for storage.

Another way to get involved as a student is to join environmentally-focused clubs and societies.  For example, the Aberystwyth Conservation Volunteers (ACV) host community gardening, tree planting, invasive plant removal, and more. ACV charges a yearly fee of £12, which goes towards the club’s transportation costs for these events. Other societies such as the Aberystwyth Caving Club and Aberystwyth University Surf Club host fundraiser events for environmental issues and sustainability - so keep an eye out.

The Students’ Union also hosts beach cleanups and other conservation efforts.
