Sports Clubs, Societies and socials
Third year Ella Moreland, who is studying in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, gives you a taste of the many Sports Club and Societies available to you:
So, you’ve just started at Aber Uni and you want to know what kind of activities are available for you to fill up your free-time? Well don’t worry, you’re in the right place! In this blog I’ll be discussing the activities available for you at Aber, to help you make friends, settle in and form connections for the years to come.
Sports clubs
With around 50 sports clubs to choose from, at Aber you’re spoiled for choice!
Whether you want to play classic sports such as football or cricket, have a go at dance or kickboxing, or try out water sports in your new seaside home; there is bound to be something for you.
Sports clubs are available for both beginners and experienced athletes, so if you want to continue your sports journey or start a new one, Aber is the place to be.
If you’re worried about whether you’ll like the sport, many sports clubs will offer taster sessions you can drop into anytime during the year, as well as training that you can sign up to on the Students’ Union (SU) website.
Sports clubs also offer members the opportunity to take part in competitions throughout the year, including Varsity which hosts over 30 sports teams competing. Even if you don’t want to compete, these events are great to come along to support your University team, and the atmosphere alone makes it worth attending!
For the full list of sports clubs check out the website: https://www.abersu.co.uk/teamaber/sports and have a chat to them at the Freshers Fair.
Societies and Volunteering Projects
Along with sports clubs, Aber also offers student-run societies for a range of different interests.
Getting involved in a society can enhance your university experience as it's one of the easiest ways to get out-and-about and make new friends with the same interests as you.
Aber offers a wide array of societies such as performance and music societies, faith and culture societies and academic societies, among others.
There are also volunteering projects such as the student newspaper and the community fridge.
Societies are also a great way to try something new, and many offer give-it-a-go sessions at the start of each semester. Don’t worry, no one will hold it against you if you drop out of a club or society and try out a different one - they are here for your enjoyment.
Check out the SU website for the full list of societies and volunteering projects: https://www.abersu.co.uk/teamaber/societies, and check out their stalls at the Freshers Fair.
Socials
Sports clubs, societies and volunteering projects will offer socials weekly or biweekly.
As many of these clubs are student-run, the type of socials will vary from club to club but will typically be a mix of drinking and non-drinking activities.
The events can vary from week to week, and attending isn’t essential to being a member, so don’t feel pressure to go every week or even at all. However, they are a great way to meet people in your society or sports club, further develop friendships, and have some fun outside of your club activities.
If you have a friend in another society, feel free to attend some of their socials as a plus one - no invite is needed.
Socials will happen on different days of the week depending on the club - follow your societies or sports clubs' social media for updates and information.
I hope I’ve given you a taster of some of the opportunities offered by the amazing array of Sports Clubs and Societies here at Aber Uni.
