Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer

If you are a business or non-profit organisation seeking to drive innovation for your business through benefitting from the University’s technology and IP, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch to discuss collaboration opportunities by emailing us: ttrstaff@aber.ac.uk

The Department of Research, Business & Innovation (RBI) is committed to helping Aberystwyth University’s academic staff protect intellectual property (IP) and assist with the commercialisation of appropriate technology.

There is a wealth of IP: patents, copyright, design rights, database rights, plant breeding rights, and unpublished “know how” created via research and other academic activity. To help staff members understand the classification of IP and the benefits of IP protection the technology transfer office has produced the following document: Aberystwyth University's guide to Intellectual Property.

Intellectual Property may have commercial potential, as new products or services. It is the role of the Technology Transfer team to identify this potential and work with you to progress it to market. We have a defined process that will give your invention the best chance of reaching the market.

The first step for protecting your IP is completing an Invention Disclosure Form (IDF). This makes a formal record of the invention, including a description of the invention, the date of discovery, and the individuals involved. They’re an essential precursor to commercialising your ideas.

The Inventor Portal makes it easy to submit your IDF and keep track of its status. Please click the link to access the Portal, and bookmark it for future submissions.

If you’d like to discuss anything relating to intellectual property with the tech transfer team, we’d be delighted to hear from you. Email us ttrstaff@aber.ac.uk.

Following the meeting, you will be asked to complete an invention disclosure form to record your idea/ invention through the Inventor Portal.
