Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Recognise the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication in veterinary consultation and demonstrate these skills.

Develop basic clinical skills and history taking during a clinical examination of prescribed species

Understand the importance of evidence-based veterinary medicine and it’s application to clinical veterinary practice

Be able to demonstrate how module content can be applied to clinical settings and how it integrates with other modules

Develop an understanding of veterinary professionalism and apply it in a Welsh context

Brief description

Principles of Veterinary Practice & Evidence Based Medicine runs throughout Year 2 and continues the themes covered in this strand in year 1 relating to communication in the veterinary field, professional standards, ethics and evidence-based decisions. This module will also develop practical clinical examination skills in a range of species. Additionally, students will learn more about the range of skills required for veterinary careers in Wales, including introductory Welsh.

Content

Veterinary Surgeons require a range of professional skills to succeed in the wide range of jobs available throughout the field. This module continues students' professional development by providing further training in clinical skills and communication, discussing the ethical challenges in relation to the veterinary field and advancing understanding of how evidence-based veterinary medicine contributes to best-practice veterinary medicine. This will be achieved through problem-based group learning sessions, practicals and lectures.

Co-ordinating with others Small group learning will encourage students to communicate, assess and present information as a team. This aspect is not assessed.

Critical and analytical thinking The coursework will require students to research topics beyond the depth and scope of the lecture material. Information from a variety of sources will be used. Research skills will be assessed in the coursework. Data analysis and interpretation of data will be taught and assessed in the coursework.
Digital capability Accessing the web for reliable information sources and using databases to find literature in preparation for the coursework.
Professional communication Students will develop effective written communication skills in the coursework and oral communication in the oral presentation, where these will be assessed. Feedback for this will be given.
Real world sense Students will have contact with veterinary surgeons and biology researchers providing insight into these sectors. Aspects of this will be taught and assessed.
Subject Specific Skills During the module, students will gain knowledge of veterinary and biological terminology assessed in coursework.
