Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. demonstrate advanced translation skills into Spanish;

2. demonstrate awareness of key linguistic issues, such as semantics, ambiguity, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, contextualization, reader, source, time, etc;

3. edit, revise and proof-read during and after the translation process;

4. translate accurately different styles in written language;

5. research on cultural topics;

6. to work independently;

7. to work without computer-assisted translation tools;

8. demonstrate cultural knowledge necessary for the analysis, contextualization and comprehension of text;

9. analyse critically and use this ability to resolve translating problems.

Brief description

The aim of this module is to offer at Final Year a practical module to develop the students’ skills in translation into Spanish. This has proven to be an essential skill for employability. Furthermore, this module offers a range of thematic and cultural knowledge needed when translating cultural texts. Emphasizing the students’ awareness of all aspects of written communication (accuracy, style, readability), awareness of cultural aspects of translation will be central to this module.

Content

Through a selection of key cultural texts, both journalistic and academic, this module focuses on up-to-date topics such as politics, ideology, environment and social justice among others.

The aim is to expose students to the specific challenges present in everyday translation. The student will learn to analyze the text typology, source of publication and style, as well as the different variations of gender and social discourses.

The selected texts will make students aware of key linguistic issues such as semantics, ambiguity, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, contextualization, reader, source, time, etc. By working on these aspects, students will develop skills to be adaptive and flexible in the open market and to demonstrate a high level of expertise when approaching professional translation, with special attention to editing and revision of both macro-textual and micro-textual structures. This module provides the necessary tools to analyse language in translation by focusing on the proficiency in the target language.

This is a practical module and although selected core reading is essential to this module, the assessment is solely of the ability to apply the above theoretical aspects.

Critical and analytical thinking Students will perform independent research in preparation of their cultural translations to overcome semantic and lexical infelicities when translating into Spanish.
Digital capability this module does not allow students to use any computer-assisted translation tool.
Professional communication Students will be expected to engage in in-class discussions and to communicate their ideas both orally. Besides, it is expected that the translations follow the professional format.
Real world sense Development of cultural awareness and translations of real texts published in the media.
Reflection Students will be expected to produce individual translations from their independent and personal research on the text to be translated.
