Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Differentiate between major stylistic levels of Spanish. Recognise, understand and apply different linguistic registers and apply the appropriate conventions, showing conscious contextual awareness.
Produce clear, detailed, well-structured compositions / expositions on complex subjects, highlighting salient issues, synthesising and evaluating information and arguments from varied sources, expanding and supporting points of view at some length with well-reasoned subsidiary points and relevant examples. Use speculation and hypothesis in presenting a complex subject, comparing and evaluating alternative proposals and arguments.
Communicate with confidence on complex subjects in an assured, personal and natural style, appropriate to the context, incorporating allusive language, idiom and humour, where appropriate.
Argue a formal position convincingly, answering complex lines of counter-argument fluently, spontaneously and appropriately. Exploit vocabulary options creatively so as to effectively use circumlocution in most situations. Can restate and challenge contributions from interlocutors, backtrack and reformulate without interrupting natural linguistic flow.
Handle complex formal and informal social interactions and communicative mediation with confidence, demonstrating contextual awareness.
Present independently prepared material in spoken or written Spanish, using complex lexical and morphological structures, demonstrating well-supported personal interpretation and critical evaluation.
Translate complex and abstract texts into and out of Spanish, conveying evaluative aspects and arguments, capturing most nuances and showing idiomatic, authentic style and grammatical usage, with little awkwardness or source language/culture interference.
Summarise complex pieces of written or spoken Spanish, clearly relaying the main points and synthesizing opinions, arguments and discussions. Exploit information / arguments to discuss a topic, elaborating on, evaluating and adding own opinions, including conveying subtle distinctions in the presentation of facts / arguments.
Employ the structure and conventions of a variety of genres, varying the tone, style and register according to context, addressee, text type and theme
Express complex, detailed and multifaceted insights into Hispanic cultural, social and political affairs.
Demonstrate proficiency in Spanish grammar and syntax, appropriate to level C1 of the CEFR.
Brief description
An advanced level course in Spanish language and culture. It will cover material from level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Successful students will achieve Common Reference Level C1/C2 (Proficient User) by the end of the module.
Aims
The aim of this module is to equip final-year students with advanced language skills of a professional standard. Students will also refine their cultural knowledge. At the end of this module successful students will be proficient users of Spanish, able to use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
Content
Students will cover material appropriate to level C1 of the CEFR, consolidating their linguistic and stylistic competence in Spanish, preparing them as future language professionals. Students will engage in the integrated study of the Spanish language in its cultural contexts. They will further refine their language skills in a variety of formats including academic and other forms of writing, complex issues pertaining to translation, and high-level competency in spoken Spanish, across a range of formal and informal registers.
