Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Evaluate the nutritional properties of livestock feeds

Evaluate nutritional requirements of livestock and formulate suitable rations

Critically evaluate nutrition focused practices in the agricultural workplace

Brief description

This module will discuss general principles relating to farm animal nutrition. Specifically, topics covered will include feed composition and analysis, digestive anatomy, the control of appetite, and energy, protein, mineral and vitamin nutrition. The nutritional requirements of selected examples of farm livestock for energy will also be covered as will methods of rationing energy, protein and other nutrients to livestock as well as nutritional disorders and the impact of livestock nutrition practices on the environment.

Content

15 lectures - General principles relating to animal feeds, feed analysis, digestive anatomy, the control of appetite, and energy, protein, mineral and vitamin nutrition will be discussed
10 lectures - Principles specific to livestock including digestive anatomy and physiology, Energy and protein requirements and rationing, vitamins and minerals, feeds, and nutritional disorders for livestock

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Creative Problem Solving Students will create a ration for an animal of their choosing. During this process, multiple problems will arise which will need to be solved by careful selection of feeds to include within the ration.
Digital capability Power point slides will need to be created for presentation assessment and spreadsheets will be used for rationing calculations.
Real world sense Feed analysis will be conducted on silage samples from the University farms and rationing will be conducted for real animals if desired. The realistic nature of the ration will be assessed.
Reflection Students will reflect on work placement and link experience to module taught material in presentation assessment.
