Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Investigate a specific physics-related scientific problem.
Identify, and critically review the scientific literature of a chosen field
Construct a project plan and implement it based on a good understanding of the physics involved and of the background literature
Identify resources to undertake a scientific project.
Summarise their findings in a comprehensive report.
Present and defend the work orally.
Brief description
Module PH375-40 doubles as the final year project for B.Sc. students and as an intermediate project for M.Phys. students. This is the parent module on Blackboard for all Year 3 and Year 4 physics projects across the B.Sc, M.Phys, B.Eng and M.Eng schemes (covering PH37040, PH35620, PHM5860, PHM5920, FG37540, FG37040, FGM5860, PHM5920).
Aims
Students learn to investigate a particular scientific problem of their choice in depth, making full use of the scientific literature. They will be responsible to plan and manage their project, and they will use common ways of presenting scientific results to the community in the form of oral and written reports.
Content
2. Planning phase (project plan, resourcing).
3. Experimental phase (experimental work, preliminary results document).
4. Dissemination phase (oral presentation, written report).
