Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
situate debates on language and identity within a European context
have some understanding of the significance of such issues in the constitution of both national and European identity
have an understanding of the relationship between the centre and periphery within the European nation-states examined
understand the usefulness of a comparative and pan-European approach to issues of this type
Brief description
The module will explore fundamental conflicts between nationality and 'Europeanness'; centre and periphery; regions and nation-states; cultural and historical particularism; a shared European heritage and identity; and questions of language rights and legislation.
Module content will draw on research expertise in the Department and offer students a combination of approaches embedded in the cultures under study. Students will have the opportunity to acquire an understanding of the national and broader European picture into which their chosen language(s) fit(s). The module will also provide a more general preparation for subsequent study of Francophone and Germanophone society, politics, language and culture. It is open to students outside the Department and presupposes no prior linguistic knowledge.
Content
The module will cover France and Germany from the point of view of language use, language rights and national / regional identities in their relationship with language. It will cover the historical context to the current socio-linguistic situation in these territories and highlight key issues and debates around the political and social dimension of language.
