Brief description

Developing professional skills will underpin the success of our graduates and this module seeks to deliver on this. Embedding an understanding of health and safety, legal frameworks including IP will be essential. Gaining insight into the various operations of an engineering company and importantly how sustainability can be achieved will also be covered (ie SPC and six sigma). How to manage data and present it in a form (presentation, report) that is suitable to the audience will be highlighted. Students will be made aware of key skills such as presentation, basic research methods and teamwork which will greatly enhance their perception within a company.

Aims

This module aims to provide:
• A basic knowledge and understanding of Health, Safety and Welfare that is required by managers within an engineering enterprise.
• Insight into diversity, ethics for engineers
• Sustainable Management and current practices relating to daily operations of businesses in product design, manufacture and lifecycles.
• Transferable and graduate skills that will be essential throughout the student’s studies and career.

Content

Health and Safety:
HSE and fundamental legal requirements including Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999.
Legal obligations. Contract law, copyright. Patents, design registration and trade mark protection, compliance with EC Directives, including introduction to waste management and equipment energy use directives.

Business Economics.
Barriers to entry, including technological barriers. Supply and demand scenarios; concept of elasticity; production costing and economies of scale.
Marketing and sales: the marketing mix. Market segmentation. Brand development and its importance.
Promotional techniques. Sales management and customer relationship management.
Financial and Management Accounting: Accrual and depreciation principles in financial statements, and introduction to P&L and Balance Sheets. Interpretation of financial statements and identification of key variables.
Operations management.
Engineering Project lifecycle models
Strategic planning- SWOT analysis, external and internal influences on business performance, alternative strategic approaches.
Overview of New product development for production with a view to highlight areas of product designs/processes that increase yield, lifetime and reduce waste and servicing costs.
Sustainability through quality management and use of statistical methods, including an introduction to statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments and six sigma. Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP). An introduction to the raw material Supply Chain and Value Stream Mapping.

Development of the key professional and communication skills such as:
