On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Evidence a critical understanding of the curricular and legislative expectation for teachers in Wales, including anti-racist practice and the impact of disadvantage.

Demonstrate critical conceptual understanding and application of issues that affect learning.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the professional expectations on teachers and the need for continuous professional development.

Critically demonstrate a good understanding of how, evidence, research and theory can be applied in practice

Brief description

This module emphasises an understanding the education system in Wales including CfW and the wider policy context. The integrated nature of the programme provides you with an overview of the education system in Wales, ensuring that you have a clear understanding of the continuum of learning and the specialised contribution of professionals working in Wales. In this module you will consider issues that impact learning providing you with a strong basis on which to plan and teach in the most effective and appropriate ways for all learners. You will also consider the professional expectations of being an effective teacher and how to become a lifelong learner through continuous professional learning

1. Education in Wales: introduction to Curriculum for Wales; decolonising the curriculum; international perspectives on curriculum reform.
2. Children and young people in Wales/wellbeing: diverse and changing nature of school population.
3. Additional Learning Needs Policy: exploring implications for practice.
4. Professional relationships: teachers’ responsibilities, safeguarding.
5. Evidence-informed practice: becoming a research-informed practitioner.
6. Wellbeing: policy and practice in Wales, anti-racist policy and practice.
7. Children and young people in Wales and additional learning needs.
8. Research conference
9. Developing as a professional.
10. Partnership Days: professionalism in practice; curriculum making in schools; engaging with parents and carers; professional reflection; Professional enquiry in schools; Developing Welsh language skills; job application process.
