Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Critically understand the different facets of health and well-being

Understand and evaluate the main factors that impact upon the health and wellbeing of children

Understand and evaluate roles and identities of individuals and groups, and how social and political factors contribute to the health and wellbeing of children.

Brief description

This module critically examines positive and negative factors that influence the health and wellbeing of young children. Key issues relating to healthy diet, physical activity, poverty and healthy relationships will be explored. An emphasis on multi agency working and evolving policy and legislation will be evaluated in relation to individual families, communities, and wider society.

Content

​Lectures and seminars will be based on the following:
Health
Wellbeing
Relationships
Belonging
Rights of children
Positive behaviour
Policies and procedures to ensure positive health and wellbeing
Practices to promote health and wellbeing (including own health and wellbeing)
Weeks 9 and 10 – students will be undertaking placements for a different module. Where students are not on placement, they will be involved in employability workshops and events.

Research skills Research is required for the main assessments and will be for the seminar tasks.
Subject Specific Skills Students will be challenged and encouraged to develop a range of professional skills
Subject Specific Skills Employability skills – tasks and activities undertaken throughout the module and acknowledged in the employability sessions in teaching weeks 9 and 10/students on placement during teaching weeks 9 and 10.
Team work Team work, in form of key professional behaviors and interdisciplinary working procedures, will be an important skill that will be developed throughout
