Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Understand and apply the principles of quantitative and qualitative data collection

Use a range of techniques to characterise both quantitative and qualitative data sets, including descriptive statistics, data transformations, normality checks, coding, and categorisation

Conduct analyses using a range of techniques to derive results/insights from both quantitative and qualitative data sets.

Present quantitative and qualitative data both in text and using a range of tables and figures

Utilise scientific literature to interpret and discuss research findings

Brief description

This 20-credit module is only available to recipients of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship. The module runs for 12 weeks and comprises both taught elements and self-directed study. It is designed to provide academic support to the Nuffield Scholar after the completion of their study tour, specifically the treatment of the data gathered. It also provides a route to postgraduate qualifications. Through a series of recorded lectures, students will gain an appreciation of how to analyse their data sets, both qualitative and quantitative results, and also how the best interpret the resulting data analysis. In line with the Nuffield Scholarship, the academic focus of the module will be:
Independent research into good practice in either farming, food, horticulture or rural industries outside of their home country; and Exploring the potential for applying these in the context of their home country. Scholars are able to travel anywhere in the world for a period of no less than 8 weeks to further their knowledge and understanding of their chosen study topic. On return from their travels they will submit a written report and present their findings, including recommendations to the relevant industry at the Annual Nuffield Farming Conference. Having conducted robust data to support these recommendations

Content

This module will enable students to gain an appreciation of how specific challenges affecting agriculture in their home country; are being met elsewhere. Students will identify a topic for study which is relevant to current or future challenges facing the UK’s agri-food sector; for which they must provide a detailed rationale, literature review and study plan. Students will travel for a minimum of eight weeks to countries of their choice. In order to gain most from their studies, students are required to travel independently for at least four weeks and are advised not to visit too many countries. The travel and accommodation costs associated with this module are self, or scholarship funded. Applicants wishing to undertake this module must apply for a Nuffield Scholarship and attend the New Scholars Briefing and Annual Conference held each November.

Skills Type Skills details
Critical and analytical thinking Data Report will ask students to synthesise research outputs and come up with conclusions based on analysing data.
Professional communication Students will be expected to communicate complex data outputs in the report assessment as a practice before writing their own reports.
Subject Specific Skills Students will explore in detail challenges to the UK’s agri-food sector, look at how these are being met elsewhere; and apply this learning to systems in their home country.
