Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Produce a body of work to a prescribed deadline and to a standard of stylistic sophistication, conception and execution comparable with professional practice in the field;
2. Undertake practice-led, research-based study in a strategic, informed and self-determined manner;
3. Identify and pursue an appropriate subject matter, research problem or field of action;
4. Determine a strand of related and qualitative work for immediate, future development in ARM0460 Exhibition 1;
5. Discuss and contextualise their practice within appropriate theoretical, historical and contemporary contexts.
Brief description
Portfolio: Development provides is an interface between undergraduate studies and the student’s first exhibition as a postgraduate (ARM0460 Exhibition 1). Students will develop a portfolio of art practice demonstrating i) a creative, productive and imaginative interpretation of a chosen subject matter, research problem or field of action, ii) the acquisition and refinement of appropriate technical skills, iii) stylistic sophistication, and iv) an awareness of pertinent conceptual, theoretical, historical and contemporary frameworks. The work should evidence that a student has extended their previous experience and practice.
The student will sustain a self-initiated programme of tutor-negotiated work; a programme that defines a specific research problem and which is responsive to external directives as well as the internal dynamics of the work. Students will be expected to work at an appropriate and consistent pace within a prescribed timeframe. This period of practice-led, research-based study challenges the student to experiment, test hypotheses, and broaden their field of action. In so doing students will be expected to articulate verbally the criteria by which their work is made and critiqued. ‘Forum’ seminars help hone the student’s ability to communicate orally and critically about their own as well as peers’ works. Thus, the module instils standards and strategies of professional practice.
The aim is to produce a body of works that is as a basis for ARM0460 Exhibition 1.

Content
Feedback Tutorials
Feedback tutorials are held weekly for full-time students or fortnightly for part-time students. The aim is to discuss and evaluate work in progress and to develop realistic strategies and short-term objectives. Students are expected to bring to tutorials their practical work as well as source materials (in the form of notes, reproductions, or texts) relevant to the discussion.
Practicals
Students are expected to work in their studios throughout the week. They determine their own timetable required to work at an appropriate and consistent pace in order to produce the work required within a prescribed timeframe. Along with research students, they have access to the School of Art outside the normal working day. The expectation is that, over the period of each semester (including over Christmas, Easter and Summer recess) students will accrue at least 200 hours of ‘study-time’ practice.
