Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Investigate a specific physics-related scientific problem.

2. Identify, and critically review the scientific literature of a chosen field.

3. Construct a project plan and implement it based on a good understanding of the physics involved and of the background literature.

4. Identify resources to undertake a scientific project.

5. Summarise their findings in a comprehensive report.

6. Present and defend the work orally.

7. Outline the principles of project management applicable to the chosen project.

Brief description

This module doubles as the final year physics project for BEng Engineering Physics students and as an intermediate project for MEng Engineering Physics students. The module includes a component of project management skills.
All students will undertake a project on which they will normally work in pairs under the guidance of their personal project supervisor and present their results in an individual oral presentation and final project report. The project management skills will be assessed individually.
A number of intermediate milestones (literature search strategy, full literature review, project plan and preliminary results document) are designed to keep the project focused and ensure a roughly equal workload distribution throughout the year.

Content

1. Literature review phase (literature search and review).
2. Planning phase (project plan, resourcing).
3. Experimental phase (experimental work, preliminary results document).
4. Dissemination phase (oral presentation, written report).
5. Project management skills

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Application of number is essential to analyse experimental data, including error propagation.
Communication Communication and literacy are required to present findings in an oral presentation and a written report.
Improving own Learning and Performance Reflecting on outcomes of laboratory work to plan further work develops own learning and performance.
Information Technology Instrumentation and computers are essential to perform experiments, analyse data and present results.
Personal Development and Career planning Many of the skills developed are essential elements of a physics degree and in future employment. The component on project management skills will provide tools for engineering careers.
Problem solving Problem solving skills are essential when responding to initial results and adapting experimental strategies accordingly.
Research skills Research skills are needed to devise experiments to test hypotheses and perform literature reviews.
Subject Specific Skills Knowledge of appropriate research tools, e.g. programming languages, instrumentation.
Team work Experimental investigations and literature search, review and project plan are carried out in a group.
