Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate an effective knowledge and understanding of how cultural diversity and race equality impact on education in contemporary Britain.
Critically evaluate ideological arguments about cultural diversity and race equality in society and education.
Demonstrate an ability to form coherent arguments based on sourced evidence in discussing issues of cultural diversity and race equality.
Appreciate the need to show respect for and understanding of others in a culturally diverse society whilst challenging inequality.
Demonstrate effective skills of written and oral communication in a range of different situations.
Brief description
1. This module aims to develop students’ understanding of diversity and equality in Education. Students will be required to closely analyse research, literature, and evidence of the educational experiences and outcomes of pupils from a range of backgrounds, whilst engaging in a critical analysis of key concepts such as race, ethnicity, language, gender, socio-economic background, family context, and the curriculum. Throughout the module, we will discuss and debate key questions such as: What is structural racism? How can we decolonise the curriculum? What is the role of the education system in promoting tolerance? Ultimately, the module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which schools and other education providers can ensure that they meet the needs of all pupils.

| Subject Specific Skills | Students will be required to engage with a range of evidence arising from educational research, some of which will be conflicting or contradictory. They will be required to think critically about diversity in education, and to negotiate complex and contested arguments about diversity and equality both within and outside educational institutions. |
