On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of knowledge of historical building, both secular and spiritual, and its interpretation.
Demonstrate familiarity with comparative perspectives on the history of buildings and their interpretation
Analyse and reflect critically on building types and form
Gather, sift and critically assess relvant source materials
Brief description
This module is designed to encourage an awareness of the built heritage and the importance of material culture to historical interpretation. It will help students to recognise the potential of buildings as historical evidence and to assess to what extent architectural developments are related to religious ideals and to changes in social conditions and aspirations. This will include the study and interpretation of plans, illustrations as well as written sources, and where possible and appropriate, by direct experience of buildings through site visits.
Content
Themes will include: castles, churches and monasteries, manor houses, the buildings of the lower orders.
