Semester Assessment | The International Student Profile 2500 words. This assignment involves carrying out and writing up a case study of an international learner of English. The students are matched with international learners of English at the IEC in week 3 of the Semester (1 or 2). They meet individually with their learners 5 or 6 times during the semester. The assignment is written in report form and comprises the following: a biography, and needs analysis of the learner, followed by a tailored lesson based on those needs and recommendations for their future study. The assignment also requires the TESOL students to reflect on what they learnt and the effectiveness of their own practice. | 60% |
Semester Assessment | The Unknown Language Experience 2000 words. Students are put in the position of language learners for this assignment. They receive 2 hours tuition of a language that is unknown to them (e.g. Turkish, Chinese, Swedish). The teacher providing the language classes is an English language tutor at the IEC. Different methodologies, techniques and materials are used by the teacher. The assignment requires that the students respond to the experience in a discursive way and reflect on particular events in the lessons which were memorable for them. They are additionally prompted to discuss language teaching and learning issues (e.g. group work, error correction and feedback) in the light of the experience. | 40% |

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Show competence in working with and supporting the English language learner in the area of diagnostic assessment, and lesson preparation and delivery.
