Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate advanced employability skills such as initiative, communication, independence, planning, presentation and professional deportment.

2. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of contemporary professional working practice and the business environment of the creative industries, and the considerations facing aspiring entrants to that field of production, and the considerations facing aspiring entrants to that field.

3. Reflect on and evaluate experience acquired from work placement in order to draw up strategies for career development and entry to the creative industries beyond graduation.

Brief description

Work in the Media Industries 2 continues to develop your awareness and understanding of a variety of careers and opportunities in the media industries. The module offers you an enhanced opportunity to engage directly with individuals and companies in a professional environment, giving you the critical experience of the professional workplace. The aim is to provide you with the necessary critical and conceptual underpinning needed to understand and evaluate your position as a professional in a fast-changing media environment, as well as an awareness of the business context of the media industries, including concepts of entrepreneurship and the requirements for operating as a freelancer, or employee, in the creative industries.

You will be required to build on your existing knowledge of the creative industries acquired in Semester 1 in order to further understand and evaluate the economic, social and cultural challenges facing these industries. This will include a consideration of competing/varying business models (including that of the freelancer and the ways in which start-ups are generated), marketing strategies and career structures, within a multiplatform context.

Course Delivery:
7 x 2 hour Lecture/Workshops
1 x 20 minute Work Placement Tutorial
5 day Work Placement

This module is comprised of 2 main elements:

1. Weekly lecture-workshops will explore a variety of professions and career paths within the creative industries. Special guests and industry practitioners will deliver these sessions, which aim to introduce you to the wide range of potential roles and career paths, including media production work, independent and freelance opportunties, event/festival organisation and curation, and media project management.

2. The work placement will give you the opportunity to spend an extended period of time (5 days) working in a professional, media-related environment, identified according to your interests, skills and aspirations. Tutors will support you in identifying exciting, relevant and appropriate placement opportunities across the range of areas within the creative industries.

Application of Number
Communication Communication skills - oral and written - will be developed in the module through written assignments and workshop tasks. The module will aim to develop professional communication skills during the work placement but these will not be explicitly assessed.
Improving own Learning and Performance There will be a continual dialogue throughout the module and students will also receive feedback on their written assignment which will help them improve their learning and performance. There will also be an opportunity during the work placement to evaluate learning and performance.
Information Technology This is not developed explicitly, but students are expected to engage with a range of IT tools as part of the module in terms of research for the module and during the placement.
Personal Development and Career planning This forms a central part of this module and is developed both through the teaching sessions and during the placement itself. The skill is assessed via the portfolio and the critical evaluation of the placement.
Problem solving Students will be required to develop their problem-solving skills and this skill will be assessed through the critical documentation submitted following the placement.
Research skills These skills will be developed throughout the module and form a key part of the work which will be undertaken by students. The skills will be assessed through the research portfolio.
Subject Specific Skills The module develops specific skills in production research which will be applicable to a range of media industries.
Team work This is developed predominantly during the placement where students will be placed in a professional media environment. Students will be required to reflect on the teamwork aspects of their placement experience.
