Brief description

This module explores global issues in education by first considering key concepts used in international educational policy and practice. The definitions of education across the world are considered and the role of educators explored. These issues are examined in light of historical, sociological and political perspectives. The module considers current concerns in education across the world, as well as identifying future trends and challenges.

Aims

To provide an introduction to global education;
To highlight the different definitions of education across the World;
Consider the historical, sociological and political impact on global education.

Content

Sessions may be a combination of lectures, seminars or workshops and will include the following topics:
Session 1 (2 hours) What is globalization? What is global education?

Session 2 (1 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) What does education mean in different countries?

Session 3 (1 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) Educational realities and tensions arising from globalization

Session 4 (2 hours) Global perspectives on learning and teaching

Session 5 (2 hours) Global Education Policy development - OECD

Session 6 (2 hours) Global Education Policy development - World Bank

Session 7 (1 hour lecture, 1 hour seminar) The role of educators

Session 8 (2 hours) Influences and opportunities of technology

Session 9 (1hr lecture/1hr seminar) Education as change in a globalized world

Session 10 (2 hours) The future for global education - including trans - national education.

Module Skills

Application of Number Statistical reports will be considered and data to support arguments will be analysed.
Communication This will be developed both in seminar discussions and in preparation for the assessments.
Improving own Learning and Performance Online tests at the end of sessions will illustrate areas that need improving. Assignments, academic reading, discussion.
Information Technology Discussion Boards will be used throughout. All assignments will be word processed.
Personal Development and Career planning Reflection activities during seminars will be used to encourage personal development. Opportunities to explore the workings of other countries will highlight possible career paths to students.
Problem solving During seminar activities students will be asked to reflect upon the challenges of global education and the methods of overcoming these.
Research skills Research for assignment and preparation for seminars; using Blackboard and e-resources.
Subject Specific Skills
Team work Seminar activities will involve group work.
