Aims
With approximately 100 institutions of higher education offering courses in, and related to, the sport and exercise sciences, a large number of graduates enter the job market each year. Often, to be attractive to future employees, graduates need to have skills and experiences in addition to their academic expertise. The work experience module provides opportunities for students to reflect on and progress their employability skills and gain experience in the work force, while earning credit towards their degree, to compliment their academic development. The learning and experiences that students receive during the work experience module may help their employability once they graduate. As a secondary rationale, students may have opportunities to apply their sport and exercise science knowledge in real-world environments.
Brief description
Before the student can undertake any work experience they must get agreement from the Sports and Exercise Department that the employer is suitable. They must ensure both sections of the "Work Experience Module: Health and Safety Questionnaire" are completed and a letter from the company's broker/insurance agent which identifies the level of liability insurance cover and clearly states the dates for which the cover is valid is included. A copy of this questionnaire and letter must be handed over to the department prior to commencement of any work expericne and a copy included in the assessed portfolio.
Content
A large component of the module involves work experience and independent self-reflection, and as such the majority of the content is determined by the individual needs of the students. Students are offered opportunities to engage with the services of the careers department and will learn practical job hunting skills and ways to be productive employees.
